Vintage Car ExhibitVINTAGE AND ANTIQUE CAR EXHIBIT

Saturday, September 1st

Sponsored by Mercedes Benz of North Olmsted, Oktoberfest presents its Vintage and Antique Car Show. The cars on display are more than just marvels of mechanical ingenuity. They have histories and provenance. For example, you can find out all about the German Spy Car!

Beyond being crafted with an artistry that seems to have been discarded somewhere along the assembly line, these wheels have been places. Oktoberfest invites you to hop in and take a drive back in time.

WANT TO SHOW OFF YOUR WHEELS?

Have a trippy hippy bus, mint Mercedes, or audacious Audi? Show off your wheels at the Labor Day Oktoberfest Car Show and receive both free admission and a chance to win some great prizes! To apply, simply fill out and return this form. Prizes will be awarded for Best Mercedes, Best BMW, Best Classic, Best Porsche, Best VW, Best Audi, People's Choice, Mayor's Choice, and Judge's Choice.

Hand Made Cuckoo Clockswhat makes the cuckoo coo?

If you've ever said, "I don't need to know how the watch works, I just need to tell time," you might want to reconsider. The German people have a long tradition of buildingĀ some of the best clocks in the world, and this year Okotberfest is fortunate to have on hand an expert clock builder from Suburban Clocks. Visit his shop in the Bavarian Bazaare and watch as cuckoo clocks are made by hand.

Cleveland Museum of Art - Sidewalk Chalk Artistssidewalk chalk artists

Perhaps that's what's so appealing about sidewalk chalk art: all it takes is a good rain and your masterpiece is washed away. Regardless, the artists come out in droves as if to both acknowledge and celebrate the fleeting nature of things. With Carl Jara in attendance to build a 15 foot sand castle in the likeness of Neuschwanstein, perhaps celebrating ephemerality is the theme of the 2006 Oktoberfest. After all, without the rains of 2005, this year's artists wouldn't have a canvas to work on!

Laura Nelson - Alphornalphornist laura nelson

Joining the marching band was pretty much out of the question when Laura Nelson made the fateful decision to study alphorn--and are we lucky she did! More than just a prop in Ricolah commercials, the alphorn is a beautiful instrument with a rich and fascinating cultural history.

A graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music, Laura Nelson studied Horn with AL Schmitter. She also studied Alphorn at the Schweizeralphornschule in Switzerland. Her teachers have included Fritz Frautschi and William Hopson. Constructed of spruce wrapped with rattan, the alphorn is 11' 7" in length--its bell painted with alpine flowers and the Swiss Cross. Prepare to be blown away!
